The Perfect Fit Part III – Trying ’em on

November 3, 2010

I may love shopping, but trying on clothes is my least favourite part. You see something amazing on the rack, but it looks horrible on. It’s too small or too big, or fits weirdly across the boobs. The fabric is itchy, or it makes you look 10 times larger than you are. The mirrors are hideous, the lighting even worse. You’re constantly taking off your own clothes and putting them back on, messing up your hair and makeup, and as the number of outfits grows, so does your impatience. It’s tough. But sometimes….sometimes you have a really great experience. You feel really great in something and want to keep it forever.

That’s dating. You continually try on men until you find one you want to keep for awhile. Those are really awesome moments.

So what should you consider when trying men on? Here are some things I consider both when shopping and dating:

Fabric -Is it a good cashmere or a cheap acrylic? Is he a quality guy or made up of lesser materials? Will he hold up through the rough moments, or rip at the first fall?

Care – How easy will this garment be to care for? Can you toss it in the washer or is it dry clean only? Is he easy going or high maintenance? Does he require your constant attention or is he an independent sort? Think about how much time and effort you’re willing to put in.

Fit – Do you feel comfortable in it? Can you move your arms and sit down easily? Don’t worry about size and just make sure you feel good. If you’re a six, don’t squeeze into a four. Consider how well the guy actually fits you and what your comfort level is with him. If you feel like you can’t breathe and feel trapped, he’s probably not a good fit for you!

Style – Does what you chose suit you? Are you a jeans girl wearing a Chanel suit? Be realistic about who you are and what kind of guy is right for you. Personally, I’m not a fan of metrosexual type guys, or men who spend more time getting ready than I do.

Get Out Of Your Comfort Zone – Don’t be afraid to try on something different! Sometimes a style you didn’t think would suit you works perfectly. Same goes for men. Try dating a guy you wouldn’t normally go out with. You just never know!
